Medulloblastoma
April 19, 2024
Our funny, energetic, spunky, super smart, sassy little girl, Livia, had been having headaches for almost two weeks. At three years old, we knew it wasn't normal. She had her eyes tested at the request of her nurse practitioner and we thought we found the problem when the eye exam showed she had some vision issues. However, something still didn't sit right with us, so We made an appointment with her amazing pediatrician, and he said he always follows mom gut instinct and agreed to have a CT scan done the very next day. After the CT scan we didn't leave the hospital and within 2 hours we were airlifted to the nearest children's hospital, close to 6 hours away. The CT scan showed a five centimeter diameter brain tumor which we soon found out, was medulloblastoma.
Livia Underwent a 16 hour surgery, where they removed 99.9% of the tumor. They also had to insert a tube to drain the fluid that was building up, as the tumor had pushed on her fourth ventricle and was causing pressure to build up around the brain (hydrocephalus).
Not long after Livia had another surgery, to put her central line (hickman) in place, as well as a gtube for feeding.
A couple weeks after that, she began her chemotherapy treatments. She has just finished her third cycle at the IWK childrens hospital in Nova Scotia, Canada, And we are preparing to leave within the next week, to go to the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, Canada where she will undergo three more cycles, this time high intensity, high dose followed by stem cell transplants. She has handled everything like a real little champion, a true fighter. Which is why she has earned her title as our warrior princess. She is facing everyday with courage and strength and a smile on her face.
And doesn't hesitate to show us her sassy side when she's not happy about something!
